12 Strategic questions to ask yourself in 2014

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24

Progress is deliberate, it has an intentionality about it. I began the habit of annually assessing my life in my teens.  On my own  at first and then later with a group of ladies who helped me remain accountable and focused. Over the years the core of this two part process has largely remained the same.

Part one involves looking back and asking what happened, what could we do differently and repent if necessary. Most importantly, celebrate the victories. This became an opportunity to praise the Heavenly Father for His open hand and acknowledge those areas where I had worked hard. I once read that an attitude of gratitude is the most potent legally available drug. Read our post on a Lifetime subscription to gratitude.

Part two involves one of the best tools I learnt in that group – asking the right questions. Every year we wriggled in our seats as we answered these 12 questions about our lives in the season to come:

  1. Where are you?  What is the current state of your heart, your life, your career, your marriage, your parenting, etc.,,
  2. What are your 5 top goals for the year (these could be either in your  relationship with God, career, ministry, family, marriage, physical or emotional well being etc).  What is it that you want to accomplish this year and how are you going to accomplish this?
  3. Who will, realistically, help you reach your goals and how will they do this?
  4. What’s one thing you could do this year to increase your enjoyment of God?
  5. What is the most humanly impossible thing you will ask God to do this year?
  6. In which spiritual discipline do you most want to make progress this year, and what will you do about it?
  7. What’s the most important way you will, by God’s grace, try to make this year different from last year?
  8. What is the single biggest time-waster in your life, and what will you do about it this year?
  9. What one thing could you do to improve your prayer life this year?
  10. What single thing that you plan to do this year will matter most in ten years? In eternity?
  11. What’s the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your marriage and parenting (or key relationships) this year?
  12. What is the single most important thing you could do to strengthen strategic friendships in your life this year.

Be blessed as you contemplate the new year and all it has to offer you and all you have to offer it. Remember to press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:14).
